The following images are pens that I completed on March 25, 2009. They are all made of antler. The top pen is a unique pen inspired by the material. Instead of drilling a hole all the way through the top part, it goes to a 1/4 inch from the top. The brow tyne prevented me from turning it on the lathe. The bottom section is turned on the lathe, blended to the top by hand and hand sanded.
This pen is made from whitetail deer antler. I left the natural edge (the exterior of the antler) on this one at the top. The colour is unique. I sell my antler pens for $45 each. I gave this one to friends who were so kind as to give me many antlers a few years ago. They were delighted when I stopped in a Tim Hortons, where they go nightly for coffee to give it to them. And the gift is given back. They gave me a huge ash burl, 16" x 14" which is to big for my lathe. I think I'll just have to make a hand carved bowl out of it. Thank you Ron & Brenda.
Here is a picture of the three pens I completed. The bottom one is made of mule deer with a piece of ironwood laminated through the middle of the bottom section.
Here is an individual shot of the mule deer and ironwood pen. It took a lot of hand sanding to lamenate the antler to wood, adding at least an hour to the production time.
